The New York City based band Mindless Self Indulgence has just released their 5th studio album “How I Learned to Stop Giving a Shit and Love” if you have never heard of this band I feel they are the best blacklisted punk rockers of current times. Mindless Self Indulgence’s style is not for everyone but they have a big following of very loyal fans. On tour in support of this new album M.S.I. invaded the Fillmore Detroit Saturday night with their intense punk rock show. Jimmy Urine, the bands lead singer and front man, asked for the crowd to shout out if this was your first concert, as quite a few newbie’s responded, Jimmy replayed “well you’re fck’d then, because your next show will be boring compared to this one”. I have to agree with him. M.S.I’s energy, stage presence and music are with out a doubt nothing close to boring. Fans of all ages rocked to M.S.I’s intensity and the show seemed to join the crowd into a harmony of common ground for punk lovers.
M.S.I’s music has been categorized as Synthpunk, Industrial but also as Hip Hop. Jimmy showed his rap skills on their well-known cover of “Bring The Pain” from the 1999 album “Tight”. The set also included lots of old favorites like “Bitchs” and “Shut Me Up.” The tracks from the new album also lost no speed with the crowd as most new recordings sometimes do. The album is not just a throw together some songs and see what happens kind of disc. It is a testament to the bands growth while never sacrificing their style; it is well worth owning. Jimmy introduced one of the tracks from the new album and my personal favorite “It Gets Worse” by saying “if anyone could relate to this song it is the City of Detroit.” The crowd went nuts and never lost momentum through the whole entire show. I hope M.S.I. will be back to our city soon and if you have never seen this band live I highly recommend the experience, get out and see the music!
